Classes taught by JPM at Missouri State University

Statistical Methods for Biologists

BIO550/650. I teach this course in fall semesters, alternating with Dr. Sean Maher, who teaches it in the spring. This course covers basic statistics for biological sciences, including probability theory, estimation, and null hypothesis testing. The class uses the excellent textbook The Analysis of Biological Data, by Michael Whitlock and Dolph Schluter. The graduate level version of this course (BIO650) includes some coursework in R.

Biogeography

BIO539/639. This course runs in both fall and spring semesters. This course exposes students to peer-reviewed publications, and gives students the opportunity to present in front of their peers and deeply discuss ideas in biogeography.

Molecular Markers

BIO540/640. I team-teach this course with Dr. Laszlo Kovacs. It is taught every other fall semester. This course includes a lab component, in which students are exposed to molecular lab, computational, and field-based components of studies using molecular markers.

Ornithology

BIO537/637. I teach ornithology in the spring semesters. The course includes field trips, and lab components that cover bird anatomy and diversity using the MSU teaching collection.
